More than just your average book

I just received in the mail the Gallop: A Scanimation Picture Book that we ordered to put under the Christmas tree for our little one. It is so cool that you will find yourself mesmerised! As you turn the page the animals appear to be in motion.

Mini Tech Heads

FirstĀ  of all a big apology for the silence on the blog front lately! As anyone with small babies/kids knows, that personal time on the laptop is a bit of a luxury, but I will endeavour to be more regular (and while I did buy some oatbran the other day I am talking about my posting frequency). Also if any readers haven’t yet made their way over to the Chic Mums Forum… jump on board and have a chat with us!

So speaking of trying to grab time on my laptop with baby in tow (I run an online clothing store, and Chic Mums is actually just a hobby)… I don’t know how many of you will relate to trying to surf the net or answer emails with baby on your lap? It all started when I tried a bit of Texas Hold Em while breastfeeding in the early days. These days my curious little bundle will try and move my mouse, press the keys and all round try and be involved with the activity she sees her parents doing (more hours than they’d like).

Then I came across the coolest (but pricey) toy for your mini tech head… The OUiP! kids think/thing.

It is a handheld device (that bears a resemblence to an iPod by design) that is powered by motion and doesn’t require batteries. It then changes pictures and sounds (some pre-loaded or you can load your own) to entertain and educate your junior. Unfortunately is is yet to be released, and will most likely set you back some coin when it does, but this toy will surely get your gadget lust firing!

Quicksmart Scramble Bug

I have been thinking about what kind of ride on toy to get my daughter for Christmas or her birthday (or just because)… and I stumbled across this very cool award winning design called the Scramble Bug. Suitable for 1-3 years it folds up so you can take anywhere! The other cool feature is the omni-directional castor wheels which creates a great freedom of movement. Also comes in 4 different colour options.

Christopher Columbus Eat Your Heart Out!

Need to coax your kid off the Wii, PS3, iPhone, iPod, or iDon’tKnowWhat?? How about this old-school explorers kit from Cradle Rock? The Dumpling Dynasty Explorers Kit holds a carefully chosen vintage-style metal torch, magnifying glass, metal compass, string with knot-guide and notebook and pencil, all enclosed within a funky retro style tin box. Well if it doesn’t get used (which I am sure it would) it would still make for a great ornamental value on the shelves!

Rock a bye rabbit

Scandinavian company Playsam have come up with a fresh take on the old school rocking horse, with the funky looking rocking rabbit! Available at Kido Store. I am not sure if it is me though, but as much as I like this toy it does have a slightly freaky look about it and gives me flashbacks to the Donnie Darko movie!

King of the Castle

When I was a kid I was an avid cubby maker. Whether it be under tables, in cardboard boxes, in bushes, you name it, I’d find a way. Well one might argue that this kind of creative cubby making is good for kids, and I tend to agree, but gee I would have been stoked to have one of these tents to play in (and the envy of all my friends of course!). Made by Haba, I found this one at Cocoon Living.

Puppet show

I recently just bought my daughter a cute beanie from the brand Blabla… they do great knitted stuff including booties, beanies, toys etc, but how cool are these finger puppets?!

My house or yours?

When I was a kid I painstakingly designed and built a dolls house with the help of my dad (with the building), and my mum (with the decorating). I had thought about restoring it for my daughter until I found the Villa Sibi Dolls House! This Uber-toy will fit right in at any modern home. The Villa Sibi Bauhaus Dollshouse includes Birch dollhouse, garden, pool & poolhouse; along with Beech furniture shown. Available from Sparkability.

Easy as A…B…C!

Coming from a graphic design background, I am a sucker for minimalist design, monochromatic colour palettes, and sleek type faces. Not the kind of things you usually find for your kids. And while this fantastic book may not have been marketed as a kids book…. what better way for my young one to learn the alphabet!

I’ve pre-ordered my copy from Amazon.com, due for release in October 08.
